Last week, fisheries stakeholders from across Lake Turkana gathered for the Annual Beach Management Unit (BMU) Assembly Meeting, a critical forum that ensures community voices shape the future of their own fisheries.
Grounded in the BMU Regulations (Legal Notice 121 of 2024) under the Fisheries Management & Development Act (Cap. 378), the Assembly strengthened systems that directly impact livelihoods, food security, and the long-term sustainability of the lake.
💡 Why This Assembly Matters for Communities
1. Stronger Governance = Fairer, Safer Fishing
By reviewing activities, finances, and compliance, BMU members help prevent illegal fishing, protect shared resources, and create a level playing field for local fishers.
2. Open Dialogue = Solutions That Come From the People
A 90-minute interactive Q&A allowed community members to raise real concerns, from access issues to regulation challenges, ensuring decisions reflect their lived realities.
3. Harmonized By-Laws = Clear Rules Everyone Understands
Aligning BMU by-laws with national laws makes regulations easier to follow, reduces conflict at landing sites, and improves enforcement that protects livelihoods.
4. Capacity Building = Stronger Local Leadership
Sessions led by KWS, KeFS, County Fisheries, KMA, and others equipped BMUs with knowledge on governance, conservation, co-management, and legal frameworks, strengthening community leadership where it matters most.
5. Evidence-Based Decision Making = Better Planning for the Future
Stocktaking of operations, investments, and partnerships helps BMUs identify gaps, track progress, and secure future support from partners.
6. Project Updates = Clear Impact on Households
Presentations by WFP and SND showed how the Lake Turkana Project is improving household incomes, boosting resilience, and supporting sustainable fishing practices.
📌What Was Achieved
• Validation of revised BMU Network by-laws and SOPs
• Review of previous action points to ensure accountability
• Community sensitization on governance, conservation, and co-management
• Stock take of BMU operations, training, and investments
• Joint reflection on sustainable fisheries initiatives in Lake Turkana
This Assembly is more than a formal meeting; it strengthens community ownership, improves resource management, and builds long-term resilience for families who depend on Lake Turkana.
When BMUs are empowered, fishing communities thrive. When rules are clear, incomes stabilize. When institutions collaborate, Lake Turkana becomes more sustainable for generations to come.
