About Strategies for Northern Development (SND)

Strategies for Northern Development (SND) is a local non-governmental organization working with nomadic pastoralist communities in Northern Kenya and Southern Ethiopia. SND works to empower pastoralist communities to become self-resilient and live with dignity, with programmes spanning humanitarian response, livelihoods, protection and inclusion, climate resilience, WASH, peace and governance, and institutional effectiveness.

Call for Applications

Strategies for Northern Development (SND), in partnership with Act!, is implementing the Kenya Community Engagement and Resilience Programme (KCERP), funded by the European Union through the Global Community Engagement and Resilience Fund (GCERF).

The project seeks to strengthen community resilience against violent extremism by addressing factors such as economic exclusion, unemployment, limited livelihood opportunities, and social marginalization, while strengthening livelihoods and connecting youth and women to markets.

As part of this initiative, SND invites applications from eligible youth and women groups engaged in apiculture (beekeeping/honey production) and brick making operating within Moyale and Saku Sub-counties of Marsabit County.

What Support May Be Available?

Selected groups may, subject to assessment, available resources and project procedures, receive support that could include:

  • Start-up or productive assets
  • Tools, equipment, materials or inputs
  • Technical and business skills development
  • Mentorship and coaching
  • Business and financial management training
  • Market linkages and networking

For Apiculture Groups

Potential support may include beehives and related equipment, honey harvesting equipment, protective clothing, honey processing and handling equipment, technical training, business and marketing support, and market linkage activities.

For Brick-Making Groups

Potential support may include appropriate brick-making equipment, technical skills development, business management training, and market linkage and business development support.

Please note: Submission of an application does not guarantee that a group will receive support. Support will be determined based on assessment of needs, group capacity, viability, project priorities and available resources.

Who Can Apply?

The call targets:

Youth Groups involved in or seeking to strengthen activities such as:

  • Beekeeping and honey production
  • Honey harvesting, processing, packaging and value addition
  • Bee-related products
  • Brick making and related activities
  • Other directly related activities within the identified value chains

Women Groups engaged in similar apiculture and brick-making activities.

Priority may be given to groups demonstrating the inclusion of vulnerable and marginalized community members, including young women and men, persons with disabilities, and other appropriately identified marginalized groups, in line with the project’s targeting criteria.

Where Can Groups Apply?

Applications are invited from eligible groups operating within:

What Should the Application Include?

Applicants should provide information about:

  • Group name and location
  • Contact details
  • Year of establishment
  • Number and composition of members
  • Group leadership
  • Current livelihood activities
  • Experience in apiculture or brick making
  • Current production capacity and markets
  • Existing assets and resources
  • Key challenges
  • Previous support received
  • Type and quantity of support requested
  • Estimated cost
  • How the requested support will improve production, income and market access
  • How the group will sustain the investment after project support ends

Where applicable, applicants should also attach group registration documents, constitution/by-laws, membership list, minutes approving the application, identification documents of group officials, evidence of existing livelihood activities and banking details/account statements.

Do No Harm, Safeguarding & Accountability

SND operates under a strict Do No Harm framework. Applicants are expected to ensure that their proposed livelihood activities do not create unintended negative social, economic or environmental impacts.

All selected groups will also be required to comply with applicable safeguarding, accountability, integrity and responsible resource-use requirements, participate in monitoring and verification, and promote equitable participation and benefit-sharing among members.

SND is committed to inclusive programming and encourages eligible applications from women, youth, persons with disabilities, marginalized groups and other vulnerable community members who meet the stated criteria.

Application is FREE

There are NO application fees or associated costs for participating in this Call for Applications.

Applicants are advised not to make payments or offer incentives to anyone in connection with the application or selection process.

An Opportunity to Strengthen Livelihoods & Resilience

This is an opportunity for youth and women groups in Moyale and Saku already engaged in, or with a credible basis for engaging in, beekeeping and honey production or brick making to strengthen their livelihoods, improve productivity, access markets and build sustainable income-generating opportunities.

Eligible groups are encouraged to apply.
