Humanitarian Assistance and Emergency Response

Strategies for Northern Development (SND) has embraced a holistic approach to address urgent needs and reduce the vulnerabilities of communities and families affected by natural and human-made disasters during humanitarian emergencies. SND’s commitment to providing timely and comprehensive assistance to vulnerable populations during times of crisis is evident through a range of interventions. Firstly, a multi-purpose cash transfer initiative was implemented, reaching 6,332 households and supporting a total of 31,660 beneficiaries to alleviate the effects of drought and floods. Evacuation support was provided to flood victims, and 459 water tabs were distributed to 478 households in the Saku constituency. Additionally, shelters were provided for flood-displaced victims, and food vouchers/aid supported numerous beneficiaries.

In response to water shortages, SND supplied 800,000 litres of water through trucking to affected communities. During times of drought, SND ensured essential water access by providing 12,859 litres of fuel to six community-managed boreholes in Marsabit. Through the TdH Germany SND also supported 105 vulnerable households in Adhadhi and Badanrero with ten trips of water trucking totaling to 200,000 litres of water. This improved hygiene at households level and quality drinking water during the drought period.

A sustainable food system program targeted 9,168 households in Marsabit County, supporting a total of 55,008 beneficiaries. Nutrition supplementary commodities were provided to health facilities in Marsabit, Isiolo, and Samburu, counties benefiting 216 facilities. Emergency food distributions specifically targeted 27,553 households, benefiting 165,318 individuals in Marsabit and Samburu Counties. Moreover, SND implemented a blanket supplementary food program targeting 44,000 beneficiaries across 175 sites in Marsabit County. Medical support, including drugs, was extended to affected populations, while restocking efforts included providing 136 shoats to 68 households and 400 chicks to 40 households, along with transitional feeds and hand-powered feed-making machines.
During the COVID19 pandemic SND provided the essential Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), handwashing facilities and COVID 19 awareness billboards (translated in local language) to communities, government institutions as well as other public places. Supplied items included hand sanitizers, handwashing soap, posters, billboards, 100 litres hand washing tanks with stands, N95Masks, Protective goggles, gumboots, face shields and sterile gloves. SND also conducted comprehensive sensitization and awareness campaigns. These initiatives aimed to foster a deeper understanding of preventive measures and safety protocols among the populace, thus significantly contributing to the overarching goal of mitigating the impact of the pandemic.
