In the harsh, drought-prone expanse of Northern Kenya’s Arid and Semi-Arid Lands (ASALs), every drop of water tells a story of survival and resilience.
For years, girls in Dukana began their days before sunrise 🌅, trekking long distances to fetch water from shallow wells for home and school use. Those long walks meant missed classes, fatigue, and heightened vulnerability to early marriage and other harmful traditional practices.
🌿 A New Chapter Begins
Today, that story is changing.
Through the Supporting Girls in Crisis Project (2024–2025), Strategies for Northern Development (SND), in partnership with Plan International Kenya and with funding from Adyen,, has implemented a powerful package of WASH, protection, and livelihood interventions that restore dignity and unlock opportunity for the people of Dukana.
🚰 Key Interventions
✅ Solarizing and Equipping the Dukana II Borehole
A sustainable, off-grid water system that ensures a reliable and climate-smart water source for the community. ☀️💦

✅ Installing a 50 m³ Steel Water Tank
A major storage and distribution point at Dukana Girls Integrated Primary School, guaranteeing clean, safe water for learning and daily use. 🏫🚿

✅ Laying a 2.7 km Pipeline
Connecting the borehole to the school and extending further to serve three community water tanks benefiting Dukana Girls Integrated Primary School, Dukana Primary School, and the broader Dukana community. 🌍💧\

✅ Establishing a School Water Point
Providing girls immediate access to safe water for drinking, hygiene, and school activities keeping them in class and healthy. 👧📘

✅ Supporting Local Irrigation Initiatives
Pipe connections now power small-scale irrigation for the Dukana Mazingira Farmers Group, Dukana Youth for Peace Farmers Group, and Step Up Women’s Group empowering communities to grow food and incomes despite erratic rainfall. 🌾👩🏽🌾👨🏾🌾
🌸 Beyond Infrastructure; Building Protection and Hope
This isn’t just about water infrastructure, it’s about a protective chain that safeguards the future of girls.
Where girls once lost hours to water collection, they now stay in class. With reliable water onsite, education continues uninterrupted, health improves, and the risks of early marriage and school dropout are reduced.
In a region where climate shocks and unpredictable rains often disrupt life, these combined efforts represent resilience in action;
💧 Water for education.
💧 Water for livelihoods.
💧 Water for a safer, brighter future.
